Bar bending: cutting, bending and fixing of reinforcement steel

Reinforcement steel work

Bar Bending Services

Bar bending is the cutting, bending and fixing of reinforcement steel so it matches the structural drawings exactly. ASVDF Flooring provides bar bending services at site for industrial, commercial and infrastructure projects, from Shamshabad, Hyderabad, all over India, including Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Odisha.

What bar bending involves

Reinforcement bars, usually TMT bars to IS 1786, are cut to the required lengths and bent to the shapes shown in the drawings, such as hooks, cranks, stirrups and links. The bent bars are then placed in position and tied together with binding wire so the cage holds its shape during concreting.

Working from the bar bending schedule

A bar bending schedule (BBS) lists each bar by mark, diameter, shape, cutting length, quantity and weight. Cutting and bending to the BBS keeps bend dimensions, laps and quantities consistent with the design. Bending and fixing follow the drawings and accepted practice such as IS 2502, with cover and detailing as per IS 456.

Where it is used

  • Footings, pedestals and columns
  • Beams, slabs and staircases
  • Reinforced floor slabs and pavements, including dowel and tie bars
  • Retaining walls, pits and other reinforced concrete elements

Why accurate bar bending matters

  • Correct shapes and lengths so the steel fits the formwork and design
  • Proper cover, spacing and laps for strength and durability
  • Less steel wastage through planned cutting lengths
  • A rigid, well-tied cage that stays in place while concrete is poured

Frequently asked questions

A BBS is a table that lists every reinforcement bar in a structure by mark, diameter, shape, cutting length, number and weight. It is used to cut, bend and fix the steel accurately.
