Coastal sites call for durable, well-covered concrete: IS 456 classifies a coastal environment as severe exposure. Summers inland and on the coastal plains are very hot, so pours are timed for cooler hours and curing is kept up for the full period. IS 456 calls for at least 7 days of moist curing for ordinary Portland cement concrete and at least 10 days where blended cements or mineral admixtures are used, extended in hot, dry weather.

- Joint layout — saw-cut contraction joints at planned spacing, construction joints at bay edges, and filling or sealing once the slab has shrunk
- Curing method and period, agreed before the pour so the floor is not loaded too early
